Jewellery Care Mistakes To Avoid Making

Jewellery can be very important to the wearer, whether it is simply an accessory for an outfit, a piece to help express personality or something with important personal meaning that you have an emotional attachment to.

It is important to take care of your jewellery to ensure that it looks its best and maintains its condition. But from improper cleaning to inappropriate storage, there are many mistakes made when caring for jewellery that could end up costing you time, money, and your jewellery!

Here are three jewellery mistakes to avoid making

1. Wearing the same jewellery every day

It can be easy to slip into the habit of weirding the same pieces every day, maybe never even taking them off. However, everyday jewellery will get grimy in places you can’t always see, or in ways you may not notice as the changes happen slowly.

At least once every couple of weeks you should take off these everyday pieces and give them a clean with warm soapy water and a soft-bristled brush.

2. Not cleaning your jewellery

As alluded to above not cleaning your jewellery is a big mistake. You mostly wear jewellery against your skin while undertaking various activities, and they will need cleaning just as your clothing does.

As well as periodically cleaning, twice a year schedule a thorough cleaning, or more depending on how you store them.

3. Not storing your jewellery appropriately

Avoid storing your jewellery in a place where humidity is an issue, especially in bathrooms. Sterling silver jewellery in particular will tarnish faster in humid places, meaning more time you'll need to spend cleaning it.

You should also store your precious jewellery away from free-flowing air. In part, it will simply get dusty and grimy, but sterling silver and other metals will tarnish a lot faster when left unworn in the open air.

A dedicated jewellery box will help keep your pieces organised, as well as reduce the effects of humidity and keep them cleaner.
